About this Event
Whether you are new to canning or just need a refresher course, Canning 101 with Lisa Fulk of Sunshine Canning, is a great starting point for students. The focus of this workshop will be safety, equipment, and science as we discuss the boiling water bath technique. Once mastered, this method will enable you to safely and confidently can everything from jams to pickles to fruit! Students will also participate in the hands-on part of the class when we put our knowledge to use and preserve seasonal produce that might otherwise have gone to waste. All supply costs are included in the class fee and students will take home a jar made in the class.
Cost: $30, includes all fees and supplies
Pre-Registration: Required. Space is limited, sign up early!
About: Lisa Fulk, owner of Sunshine Canning grew up in the Bradenton/Sarasota area and graduated from New College of Florida. She started canning as a way to save money and have high-quality food on hand for her family. She has since become an avid canner and is a Cornell-certified Master Food Preserver.
One of the primary missions at Sunshine Canning is to support local farmers and therefore most products are made from local, seasonal produce. They are small batch ~ often no more than five or six jars at a time ~ handcrafted from the freshest ingredients with no added preservatives. In addition they use organic produce whenever possible.
Another main focus is teaching people how to preserve their harvest at home. They recognize that canning can be intimidating, therefore they strive to lead classes that demystify the process, cover safety concerns, equipment, and different preserving techniques so that students get a full understanding and are confident to safely preserve food at home.
