As Transition Sarasota's Suncoast Gleaning Project enters into its fifth season, learn how you can get involved in supporting local farms, local food banks, and the food insecure in our community all at the same time.
Those who have participated in this project in the past have enjoyed the camaraderie they have experienced in the fields, benefitted from being able to take home some of the produce for themselves, and taken pride in knowing they are making a difference. More than 130,000 pounds of organic fruits and vegetables have been donated to local food banks to date.
While we won't know for sure if there will be anything for us to glean until the day before this event, the first harvest at Jessica's Organic Farm has taken place on the last Monday in October during each of the past four seasons. Even if that doesn't happen to be the case this year, you will still receive a tour of the farm and an orientation to the gleaning process. And either way, we will carpool together to All Faiths Food Bank afterwards for a guided tour of their facilities.
