Thanks to its positive message and practical approach towards building more sustainable, just, and conscious communities from the bottom up, the Transition Movement has spread rapidly from its beginnings in Totnes, England in 2006 to thousands of communities worldwide today. Sarasota is one of them.

Although each local Transition Initiative is run independently, all share a common understanding of the context for Transition, a set of seven principles, and a similar process, which is made up of five stages as well as dozens of different "ingredients".

The Transition Movement is supported internationally by The Transition Network and nationally by Transition U.S. Several useful books have been published about Transition, including The Transition Handbook: From Oil Dependency to Local Resilience (2008), The Transition Companion: Making Your Community More Resilient in Uncertain Times (2011), and The Power of Just Doing Stuff: How Local Action Can Change the World (2013).
